Cotton Clothing

Breathable, easy to wash and soft against skin, cotton is the most-used natural fibre in clothing. Jersey, poplin, twill and canvas are all cotton woven or knitted differently, and the weight decides how a piece hangs. Every cotton piece here is made to order by its designer.

One fibre, many fabrics

Most of what is in this grid is cotton, but the fabric changes everything about it. Knitted into jersey it becomes a t-shirt; knitted with loops on the back it becomes french terry or, brushed, fleece for sweatshirts. Woven plain and tight it is poplin for shirts, woven on a diagonal it is twill and denim for trousers, and woven heavy it is canvas for bags and aprons.

What to look for

Longer fibres spin into smoother, stronger yarn that pills less, which is why combed and long-staple cottons feel softer. Cotton shrinks when it is first washed hot, so many pieces are pre-shrunk or garment-washed before they ship. Organic cotton is the same fibre grown without synthetic pesticides, and cotton blends add polyester or elastane for stretch and shape.

Designing in cotton

Cotton takes dye and print well, which is why it is the default for printed tees and sweats. When you design your own piece, the base garment fixes the cotton fabric and weight, so pick the base for how you want it to hang, then the colour and print.
